Carlos Alcaraz claimed his third Australian Open title after a breathtaking five-set final against Jannik Sinner that lasted over five hours, ending 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena.
The match was widely described by commentators as one of the finest Grand Slam finals in the modern era, with both players exchanging stunning baseline rallies and unbelievable winners throughout.
“I have no words right now,” said an emotional Alcaraz during his victory speech. “Jannik pushed me to every limit. I am just so happy.”
Sinner, who had been seeking to complete a calendar Grand Slam after victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year, cut a disconsolate figure at the end but was gracious in defeat, praising his rival’s “incredible fighting spirit.”
With this victory, Alcaraz now has eight Grand Slam titles to his name and moves to the top of the ATP world rankings, ending Sinner’s 14-month reign at the summit.
