The FUFA Women football development committee is in an intense discussion to improve the state of women’s football ahead of the FUFA executive committee meeting on Friday 24th July.
As revealed by North East FUFA delegate and a member of the women’s football development committee, Julius Opolot who said that FUFA is set to introduce regional League competition for women, National tour for senior and junior national team like the cranes “namutima” used to be and Uganda premier League clubs to play a headed fixture with the women clubs.
“We have concluded a proposal to have women’s teams play on the same day and venue with their respective uganda premier League men’s clubs because it allows us to broadcast all games and have the same fanbase for women’s football”. Julius Opolot stated
He also made it clear that we may see the regional League being played in each region which will see two teams qualify for the elite league.
“Every region will play and produce two teams who qualify for the elite league, and the elite league is in four clusters where North East will play Eastern, Northern will play West Nile, kampala vs Buganda, then Kitara plays Western”. Opolot added
The top two teams in each cluster will be convened in one venue to face off in order to select the final two teams that will qualify for the supper league and all this is due to be confirmed in the FUFA executive committee meeting on Friday.
But according to Opolot the move is aimed at reducing costs of transport as seen in the old format where teams move from one region to the other.
As it stands the uganda premier League will see new entrants URA ladies Women FC and Jinja United in th 2026/27 campaign after URA beat Jinja United in the finals of elite league.
FUFA competition director Hajjati Aisha Nalule also reaffirmed FUFA’s commitment in women’s football development during the induction of the new CEO of the North East region.
“We want to see women football played at all levels and it’s very unfortunate that particularly North East lack a team in top flight after Olila were relegated”
Agnes Mugena FUFA delegate North East and an FUFA excom member also made it clear that FUFA is considering developing all talents inthe country with emphasis on North East region.
“the state of football for sure is not good in the North East and we are going to connect with cranes captain Ruth Aturo to rejuvenate the state of women’s football in the North East and the other parts of the country”. Agnes Mugena in a statement
Anticipation now builds a head of the FUFA executive committee meeting and the new season on the new developments by FUFA with excitement and conversation expected by different football stakeholders.
